Signs You Have a Cockroach Infestation

Cockroaches are nocturnal and expert hiders, which is why most New Jersey homeowners don’t spot an actual roach until the infestation is already well underway in a wall void or basement. Catching these signs early can save you from a much bigger problem down the line.

Cockroach Droppings
One of the most reliable early signs. German cockroach droppings – the ones you’re most likely to find in a New Jersey kitchen – look like small dark specks or pepper granules and are typically found in kitchen cabinets, along baseboards, and behind appliances. American cockroach droppings are larger and cylindrical with ridged edges. The more droppings you find, the more active the infestation.

Cockroach Eggs (Egg Cases)
Cockroaches don’t lay individual eggs — they produce oval-shaped egg cases called oothecae, each containing anywhere from 10 to 50 eggs depending on the species. German cockroach egg cases are small and brown; and in NJ homes they turn up most often tucked behind kitchen appliances, inside cabinets, or in cracks near baseboard heaters.

Musty or Oily Odor
A large or active infestation often produces a distinctive musty, oily smell caused by pheromones cockroaches use to communicate. If a room — especially a kitchen or basement — has an unpleasant odor you can’t explain, it’s worth investigating.

Shed Skin
Cockroaches molt multiple times as they grow, leaving behind translucent shed skins. Finding these casings in hidden corners, under sinks, or inside cabinets is a strong indicator of an active population nearby.

Daytime Sightings
Cockroaches are nocturnal. Seeing one during the day typically means the infestation has grown large enough that competition for food and shelter is forcing them out into the open — a sign the problem is more advanced than it appears.

Spotted any of these cockroach infestation signs in your home? The sooner you act, the easier it is to treat. Excel’s technicians will identify the species, locate harborage areas, and recommend a treatment plan — all starting with a free inspection. Schedule yours today.

Types of Cockroaches We Treat in NJ

The type of roach in your home determines how it needs to be treated – misidentifying the species is one of the most common reasons DIY treatments fail. Here’s what our technicians most commonly find in New Jersey homes.

German Cockroach
The most common – and hardest to eliminate – indoor roach in the U.S. Small (½ to ⅝ inch) and light brown with two dark stripes behind its head, this species lives and breeds entirely indoors near heat and moisture: behind refrigerators, under sinks, and inside wall voids. Their reproductive speed is what makes them dangerous; a small problem becomes a full infestation within weeks. Over-the-counter sprays typically scatter them deeper into walls rather than eliminating them.

Oriental Cockroach
Dark brown to black, about 1 inch, and drawn to cold, damp conditions – basements, floor drains, and crawl spaces. Often called ‘water bugs,’ they travel through plumbing and are strongly associated with sewage, making them a real sanitation concern. More cold-tolerant than most species, so they stay active in New Jersey longer into the fall.

Brown-Banded Cockroach
Unlike most roaches, this small (½ inch) species avoids moisture and prefers warm, dry, elevated hiding spots – inside electronics, behind picture frames, in closets, and near ceiling lines. Standard kitchen-focused cockroach treatments often miss them entirely, making a whole-home inspection essential.

American Cockroach
Large (up to 2 inches), reddish-brown, and occasionally found in New Jersey basements, floor drains, and sewer systems. Less common indoors here than German or Oriental cockroaches, but worth ruling out if you’re seeing something bigger than a typical house roach.
