Seal Items in Luggage in Plastic Bags
While this may seem strange to some travelers, it is nevertheless an important step to take. While packing for a trip of any length, you should place all of their items: clothes, shoes, and even electronics, into sealed plastic bags. These bags should not be left open for long periods, and should only be opened when something is needed. If you want to be extra cautious, you can place your plastic bags inside of a large trash bag, making absolutely sure that bed bugs do not have any opening or access point.
Inspect a Hotel Room before Settling In
Before you settle down and start unpacking your items, they need to make sure that your hotel room is not infested with bed bugs. You should first place your luggage in an area that is safe, such as on a luggage rack or in the bathroom. You should pull back bed covers and check the sheets and pillows for any signs of bed bugs. Also look at the headboard, and behind paintings and mirrors. Furniture should also be inspected. A flashlight may be necessary for assistance in some situations.
If Bed Bugs Are Present, Ask To Have another Room
In a number of cases, especially if a hotel is not particularly reputable, there may be bed bugs present in a room. When this happens, do not accept that they are there and settle in. Instead, immediately request that you be taken to a different room. It is important that the new room is not in the immediate area of the old room. Because of the close proximity, bed bugs could have been transferred by the cleaning crew or even fellow guests.
Unpack Directly into Washing Machine
Once you come back home, even if you did not see any bed bugs during your stay, you should still be very careful. The luggage and the content inside should be inspected on a light colored surface, and clothes should be placed into the washing machine. Unpacking should not be done on a bed, as this is the fastest way to bring about bed bug problems. If you did bring home bed bugs, you can get Excel to control your bedbug problem.
